Meet Our New Program Coordinator!

Hi! My name is Nanci Sarmiento, and I’m a graduate from North Central College where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Psychology. I've always been passionate about the inner workings of politics and government. Understanding how policy shapes communities and how individuals can drive change through civic engagement truly excites me. Whether it's analyzing court decisions, discussing international law, or diving into grassroots advocacy, I’m all in.

Outside of academics, you can usually find me curled up with a good book, out for a run to clear my head, or sipping on a warm cup of tea (my ultimate comfort!). These little joys keep me grounded and energized as I continue to pursue work that makes a difference.

From the moment I began working with students whether in a classroom at Bright Horizons, coordinating nature-based experiences with Audubon Great Lakes, or building creative wellness initiatives at Brushwood Center I discovered a deep passion for empowering young people. I thrive in environments where I can foster growth, spark curiosity, and create meaningful, supportive experiences that help youth thrive emotionally, socially, and intellectually.

My journey into youth programs wasn’t just a choice; it felt like a calling. Every time I developed a curriculum, adapted a lesson to meet a child’s unique needs, or watched a student light up while learning about environmental justice, I knew I was in the right place. I’m especially passionate about creating inclusive, culturally aware spaces that uplift youth voices and help them realize their full potential.

Working across education, community engagement, and political activism has taught me that real change starts early and I want to be part of that spark. Through CLE I'm excited to dive into work that blends creativity, education, and equity. Knowing that I’ll get to contribute to programs that are not only fun and engaging, but also meaningful and rooted in justice, makes me feel inspired. I can’t wait to learn from the team, connect with the students, and be part of something that’s making such a real difference in the community.
